ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) - A new voice is stepping up to help shape parks, recreation, fire protection and emergency medical services in southern Sacramento County.
After a thorough and competitive process, the Cosumnes Community Services District Board of Directors voted at its April 16 meeting to appoint Reina Tarango as the new director for Division 3.
Tarango was immediately sworn in and began her term representing the district’s southern Elk Grove neighborhoods. She will serve until the next regularly scheduled election on Nov. 3, 2026.
Tarango is a longtime Elk Grove resident, a health advocate and a respected community leader. She currently serves as the Purchase Referred Care manager for Wilton Rancheria, overseeing one of the tribe’s largest federally funded health departments. She also serves on the City of Elk Grove’s Diversity and Inclusion Commission, where she helped lead the creation of Elk Grove’s first event honoring Native people. As a wife and mother of six children, Tarango has a deep connection to the community and a strong commitment to its future.
“I intend to uphold the values that make this community so special and ensure we continue moving forward — with a strong focus on safety, growth, and opportunity,” Tarango said. “I’m proud to support the essential work of our fire and emergency services and to champion the parks and recreation programs that uplift our families and bring us together.”
“We are pleased to welcome Director Tarango to the Board,” said Cosumnes CSD Board President Angela Spease. “Her decades-long commitment to Elk Grove, combined with her leadership in healthcare and community advocacy, makes her a powerful addition. Reina brings a thoughtful, inclusive approach to public service that aligns with our mission and values.”
The appointment follows Director Jim Luttrell’s resignation in March after more than eight years of dedicated service. The board received four applications for the vacancy and extends its gratitude to the residents who stepped forward to serve.
“We’re grateful for the time and effort each applicant dedicated to the public interview process,” added President Spease.
Cosumnes CSD provides essential services to a growing population of more than 210,000 people. The district oversees fire protection and emergency medical services in Elk Grove, Galt and unincorporated southern Sacramento County, along with parks and recreation services in Elk Grove.
The board plays a key role in shaping policy, overseeing the district’s budget, and guiding services that enhance the safety and quality of life for residents.
