ELK GROVE/GALT, CA (MPG) - Creating and maintaining defensible space around buildings is one of the most effective ways to protect homes, neighborhoods, and firefighters. Even in suburban neighborhoods, wind-driven embers can travel more than a mile ahead of a wildfire and ignite dry leaves, mulch or other vegetation around homes.

Routine yard maintenance can play a critical role in reducing the local fire risk.

The Cosumnes Fire Department asks residents to protect their homes and neighborhoods by completing the following steps before peak fire season: Remove dry leaves, dead plants, fallen branches and weeds from your yard and around structures; Maintain at least 30 feet of defensible space around buildings and along property lines; Keep at least 10 feet of clearance around propane tanks, solar panels, generators and electrical equipment; Properties two acres or larger must have weeds and vegetation cleared across the entire parcel; and maintain grass at no taller than two inches throughout fire season.

Taking action now helps reduce wildfire risk and keeps the community safer throughout the dry season.
